MONICA DE LA HOYA

Monica De La Hoya, a trial lawyer and litigator with diverse experience, is the newest associate to join Boyce Schaeffer LLP.

After receiving her bachelor’s degree in English, Monica spent two years on the island-state of Yap in the Federated States of Micronesia as a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer. In Yap, she developed school libraries in rural villages and taught English and computer skills. Monica met her husband, a Physician Assistant in Ventura County, during this time.

Upon her return to the U.S., Monica obtained a paralegal certificate and began working for a civil litigation law firm. Her experience as a legal assistant led her to law school. She attended Southwestern Law School where she received a Schumacher Leadership Scholarship. During law school, Monica completed coursework in Guanajuato, Mexico and at Lewis & Clark Law School in Portland, Oregon. She also externed at the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office and worked as Panelist Assistant for a NAFTA Binational Panel Review Chapter 19 dumping case. Monica also volunteered as a translator for the Coalition to Abolish Trafficking and Slavery.

After taking the California Bar Exam, Monica began working for the Ventura County Public Defender’s Office. As a Deputy Public Defender she gained criminal trial experience while representing clients charged with misdemeanors. Monica then worked as a Deputy County Counsel for Imperial County where she primarily represented the Department of Public Works.

In her spare time Monica enjoys reading, exercising and spending time with her family. She is fluent in Spanish.
